When it comes to old and broken electronic appliances, many of us throw them out or let them gather dust in a drawer. However, there are many ways of putting these items to better use that could help you to repurpose them or even earn some money from them. Here are just a few options for putting your old broken gadgets to use.

Scrap them for cash

It doesn’t matter about the condition – there are companies out there that will buy your old broken electronics in order to recycle them. There may be some faulty parts, but other could be salvaged and used to repair other items or build new gadgets. Computer technicians for example may pay for old broken gadgets so that they can strip them for parts that may be useful in the future – it could save them a lot of money rather than having to order in new parts. In other cases, materials can be molten down and reused in other products. Make sure that any data is wiped from an old computer or old phone as there have been scams in which people have obtained private information this way.

Repair them and sell them

In other cases, you may be able to fix gadgets and sell them on. So long as you’re not paying more to repair the item than you’re likely to earn from selling it, this could be a great way of making a few extra dollars. You could hire a repairman or take on the challenge of doing it DIY. The internet has made it much easier to do the latter and there are tutorials available that can guide you through each step. You may also be able to buy parts online – all you may need is a new screen to make a mobile phone sellable or a new current shunt resistor to get a broken air conditioning unit working. Make sure these items are full working again before selling them on.

Repurpose them

In other cases, you may be able to repair an item and use it for your own convenience. Bringing an old broken phone back to life could have its advantages – it could be used as a spare phone or a smart remote or a communal mp3 player or even a GPS for the car allowing you to still use your current phone whilst getting the dual use out of this other phone.

In other cases, you may be able to repurpose an old broken gadget entirely without having a need to repair it. People have turned old washing machine drums into firepits, old blenders into lanterns and even computer fans into desk fans to help cool the home. Get creative and see what you can come up with.
